Haier
Haier Group Corporation is a Chinese multinational home appliances and consumer electronics company headquartered in Qingdao, China. It designs, develops, manufactures and sells products including refrigerators, air conditioners, washing machines, microwave ovens, mobile phones, computers, and televisions. The home appliances business, namely Haier Smart Home, has seven global brands – Haier, Casarte, Leader, GE Appliances, Fisher & Paykel, Aqua and Candy.
According to the data released by Euromonitor, Haier is the number one brand globally in major appliances for 10 consecutive years from 2009-2018. The Haier brand was also recognized by Brandz in 2019 as the most valuable IoT ecosystem brand in the world with a brand value of $16.3 billion. In 2019 Haier Smart Home ranked 448 on Fortune's Global 500 list with a revenue of $27.7 billion. Haier Group also consisted of two listed subsidiaries in three exchanges Haier Smart Home, Haier Electronics Group Co., Ltd and D-share listing of Haier Smart Home in China Europe International Exchange of Frankfurt.
In 2015, Haier began investigating how the internet of things could be integrated into their devices. The company cited a separate, unrelated study by Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. That study found three barriers to the adoption of smart home technology: lack of unified protocols/single point of access, passive services and the lack of complete solutions. At the time Haier's core competencies lay within the large appliance sector and not the small electronics sector. Subsequently, they partnered with the then leading IoT platform IngDan owned by the Cogobuy Group to overcome their shortcomings. By utilizing Cogobuy's and supply chain, they were able to integrate IngDan's portfolio of components, modules and edge voice analysis into smart appliance products.
Haier introduced their smart appliances across seven product lines in the major appliance industry: air, water, clothes care, security, voice control, health and information. Zhang Ruimin, soon after becoming managing director in 1985, ordered his employees to destroy 76 refrigerators with sledgehammers following a customer complaint in an effort to radically change the company's culture to one that embodies quality control practices. At the time, Chinese brands for domestically produced consumer goods were generally regarded by overseas consumer markets as being of poor quality, even when compared subjectively with foreign brands manufactured in China. The cultural transformation towards quality driven manufacturing resulted in Haier becoming the first company in China to get ISO 9001 certification.

Toshiba
Toshiba Corporation is a Japanese multinational conglomerate headquartered in Minato, Tokyo. Its diversified products and services include power, industrial and social infrastructure systems, elevators and escalators, electronics components, semiconductors, hard disk drives, printers, batteries, lighting, logistics as well as IT solutions.
It had been one of the biggest manufacturers of personal computers, consumer electronics, home appliances, and medical equipment. As a semiconductor company and the inventor of flash memory, Toshiba had been one of top 10 in the chip industry until the late 2010s, when it was spun off as Kioxia, to save Toshiba from bankruptcy.
As of 2012, Toshiba had 39 R&D facilities worldwide, which employed around 4,180 people, and was organized into four main business groupings: the Digital Products Group, the Electronic Devices Groups, the Home Appliances Group and the Social Infrastructure Group.
In the year ended 31 March 2012, Toshiba had total revenues of ¥6,100.3 billion, of which 25.2 percent was generated by the Digital Products Group, 24.5 percent by the Electronic Devices Group, 8.7 percent by the Home Appliances Group, 36.6 percent by the Social Infrastructure Group and 5 percent by other activities. In the same year, 45 percent of Toshiba's sales were generated in Japan and 55 percent in the rest of the world.
Toshiba invested a total of ¥319.9 billion in R&D in the year ended 31 March 2012, equivalent to
5.2% of sales. Toshiba registered a total of 2,483 patents in the Unites States in 2011, the fifth
Toshiba had around 1,41,256 employees as of 31 march 2018.
Toshiba has been judged as making "low" efforts to lessen its impact on the environment. In November 2012, they came second from the bottom in Greenpeace's 18th edition of the Guide to Greener Electronics that ranks electronics companies according to their policies on products, energy and sustainable operations. Toshiba received 2.3 of a possible 10 points with the top company receiving 7.1 points. "Zero" scores were received in the categories "Clean energy policy advocacy", "Use of recycled plastics in products" and "Policy and practice on sustainable sourcing of fibres for paper". In 2010, Toshiba reported that all of its new LCD TVs comply with the Energy Star standards and 34 models exceed the requirements by 30% or more.
